So, you've decided to adopt a cat. You need to make sure your home has got all the essentials your new feline friend will need. 

A Cat Carrier

You need a carrier to transport your cat safely. The carrier is designed for all sorts of commutes, including when you take your cat to the vet for a regular checkup. In other words, you want something sturdy but light, easy to handle and clean. We recommend a top-loading carrier where you can open the roof to get your cat in and out. 

You can also consider a soft carrier, such as a rucksack, for different commuting styles, such as taking your cat on a bus journey in town.

Litter Boxes

There's no secret about it: Your cat will need a place to go and do their business. If you have more than one cat, we suggest having one litter tray per cat plus an extra one. 

Food and Water Bowls

Cats can be picky drinkers. They are used to drinking from running water in the wild, so many domesticated cats prefer a water fountain. This can be an excellent investment to ensure your kitty drinks enough water. 

You should have a food bowl per cat in your home. Ideally, you want to separate the water from the food bowls. Pet feeders and sealed bowls are a great choice if your cat eats at a specific time of day.  

Collars

Even inside cats should wear a pet collar with an ID tag for their safety, as it can help with identification if they somehow escape. Remember that buying a collar doesn't replace a microchip! 

You can also train your cat to walk on a lead.

Types of Cat Food

Will your cat prefer dry food or wet food? If you are unsure, you could try a combination of both and let your cat decide.

If you have an automatic feeder, you want to use dry food.

Types of Litter

What does the perfect litter tray look like? It depends entirely on your cat. A covered tray is a preferred option to provide your cat privacy in an open space. However, remember that for your cat's comfort, the box should be at least 1.5 times bigger than your pet. Larger breeds will find open top trays more comfortable. 

You'll find different types of cat litter products. In the wild, felines prefer sandy and unscented environments. So, if you wish to introduce scented litter, it's best to do it gradually. Crystal litter is popular as it can limit bad odours if you can't empty the litter tray immediately. Pellet litters are more environmentally friendly. You can also find specialist products to remove cat urine scents in the event of accidents!

Types of Toys

Cats love high places, scratching, and hunting. Therefore, when it comes to toys, you want to combine the following:

• A cat tree or elevated platforms
• A cat scratcher or a scratch post
• A toy on a string or a small toy they can toss and bite

Cat Grooming and Health

While cats tend to groom themselves, it doesn't mean owners have an easy job. 

As a cat owner, you will need to invest in grooming essentials:

• A nail trimmer
• A brush
• Oral care set for cats 
• Flea and tick treatments (even for indoor cats)

Some cats will also need specialist shampoos to manage dandruff or skin irritation.  

For nervous cats, we strongly recommend a diffuser, which can help your kitty to relax. It's also great when you have more than one cat in the same household. 

Your vet may also recommend specialist supplements to support your cat's health.
